Nah, we need onions, corn tortillas, shredded chicken, though maybe beef if that's not there, and oh right we need red sauce and some rice and sour cream and--god I am so hungry right now just thinking about it!

Oh! Like you girls all have needles and...

[no, not going to mention the scissors after what happened to Tony]

I think I didn't pay enough attention - I will go and bring it. Or, no - you can come with me, then we can find a weak window together.

[not that any window looked weak, but they'll have to check again]

[couldn't quite keep up with that list; also he misses his dictionary with increasing urgency]

[just concentrates on not falling on his face while she pulls him down the stairs and into the kitchen]

/suddenly you're stuffed into an apron!

Okay, well, you go ahead and chop up the onions, then, go on, ugh thank you for doing that, I tear up too much around them!

/now to dig in through the pantry for other things

You can wait at the door if you want to. But... I'm in your room now, why is that okay, but not the other way? I mean, um...

[clumsily takes her hand]

You're my-- my snoubenka! I'll marry you. So you can be in my room if you want.

[stares at the onions]

[starts cutting them into slices]

[slowly and carefully]

A bit. They're more like deer than elk, though. [smiles a bit, let's talk more about reindeer]

Ah, I see, so it would make sense you would know a lot about trees then. You can really figure out that sort of thing?

[cue squealing and hugging you down to the ground]

Ah, you are much adorable! Then I shall go with you to your room! I want no humorous business, though! We must not do that until after we are married!

[but still, eh, peck on the lips will do for now]

I... was thinking of what to say, I guess.

/a few minutes later and out of the pantry

/shoving down potato chips and handing the bag to you

Hungry? I always get hungry when I cook.

[gives him a little smile back - as dreary as the situation is, at least most classmates are turning out to be really nice]

Hm, I didn't work in the laboratories... I mostly just talked to some of the research people about which trees have which kind of bark, and which bugs eat which leaves, and which trees can defend themselves a little - by tasting bad to the beetles, you see - and how they pollinate... and the scientists do the crossing. But they gave me some of the saplings!

[smiles more brightly]

[shrugs and lays on this nice pillow]

[very startled at her fervour - luckily he set his soil glass down on her bedside table before he took her hand, so the tackling doesn't end in tragedy]

That seems so complicated for trees...

[feels his stress level rise again immediately - it had just started to go down a little as long as she was busy]

[offers a tiny smile of appreciation as he grabs some chips, though]

I only get hungry after many hours, even when other people have food! But... when I am hungry, then I can't do anything else until I eat.

[feels sheepish and turns back to the onions]

[flexes his arm up around the pillow]
