Ah... yes. It wouldn't make sense to carve a tree, would it?

[he's just innocently excited at the possibility of having found another (even just somewhat) understanding soul, okay]

Y-yes! That's right.

What things have you made?

[legitimately curious]

[dead trees are prettiest left alone, but very beautiful things *can* be made of them]

Er... I don't really have anything here, but I've made a lot of things. Mostly animals. Sometimes inanimate objects, but animals are more fun to make. My favorite are reindeer.

Er... what are you?

[you like trees but you certainly don't look like a lumberjack....]

Reindeers... they are like elks, right? Just smaller? Like, um, between elks and deers... I saw a picture of them in a book.

And I'm a dendrologist - I, I grow trees. The last few years I have helped scientists find out which trees they can cross fruit trees with so that they will be stronger.

A bit. They're more like deer than elk, though. [smiles a bit, let's talk more about reindeer]

Ah, I see, so it would make sense you would know a lot about trees then. You can really figure out that sort of thing?

[gives him a little smile back - as dreary as the situation is, at least most classmates are turning out to be really nice]

Hm, I didn't work in the laboratories... I mostly just talked to some of the research people about which trees have which kind of bark, and which bugs eat which leaves, and which trees can defend themselves a little - by tasting bad to the beetles, you see - and how they pollinate... and the scientists do the crossing. But they gave me some of the saplings!

[smiles more brightly]

That seems so complicated for trees...

[he had no idea they had so many things going for them HE JUST CARVES UP THEIR DEAD TREE BODIES]

[shakes his head]

No, it's not complicated! Not after you understand it one time.

Can you maybe do something for me?

[hopeful eyes]

I guess that's what makes you super high-school level at it, then... [he wouldn't even know where to begin]

[blinks] Ah, like what?

Can you maybe eat potatoes often? And carrots, too? And can you please put your apple cores and orange seeds into the boxes I put on the tables in the cafeteria? That would be very helpful!

Er... ah... I can try? I do like potatoes...

[what a weird-ass request]

[smiles]

Eh... I mean, no problem. I can try, at least.

[if you don't mind him, he'll now take this time to look for potatoes]

[and only find froot loops]
