Chapter 1: (Ab)normal Days

[You woke up somewhere. A classroom, maybe, or a hallway, or even a cafeteria. Regardless, you woke up. You remember entering the famed "Hope's Peak Academy" as a Super High School Level ____. You opened the doors, that's right, but... then what? Then you woke up.]

[There's a note next to you with a map, leading from your location to an auditorium. Next to the map is written in nice, flowing script, Come immediately!]

[...Well, what else are you going to do? Some way or another, you find yourself following the simple map and entering the auditorium. There's a large stage with a projector and a screen, and the rest of the students are filing in. Everyone looks like they've just woken up, as well.]

["Is this Hope's Peak?" you might think. But before the thought can finish in your mind, a voice you've never heard before booms from the auditorium speakers.]

All the kids have woken up! They’ve all gathered, just like lambs to the slaughter!

[The projector whirs and a display on the screen flickers to life. A young man in a dark room is grinning into the camera, leaned forward in his chair. He's completely dark - a shadow in a shadowed room - but for his bright teeth gleaming like silver.]

Hmm, judging by your faces, you didn’t like that analogy? Don’t worry, I’m just commending you all on a job-well-done – following directions and doing as you’re told is a key aspect in a successful high schooler’s life. Stop looking so sad! There, try following that direction!

Now, take a look around. Do you recognize anyone? [He pauses, giving everyone a moment to do so.] That’s right, you’re all strangers, never so much as passed a glance over one another. Yet you’re undeniably connected, both in the school you attend and the fate you share. Here at Hope’s Peak Academy, where only the best of the best are enrolled, you all must share in the joy of a connected string of fate! Together, you all will dye it red with your hearts.

...Ahh, so many of you look confused or perturbed. [He sits back in his chair, shaking his head.] Let me explain things in a simpler way: Mutual killing. If you want to get out of here, you’ll have to work for it. No free-loaders! All the doors and windows are locked up tight, and I’ve got cameras watching your every move! If you so much as touch the locks on the doors, I’ll blast you into disrepair! So, to get out, it’s easy! Kill one of your comrades, make sure no one knows, and you’ll get to go free! It’s so easy! Any one of you has the ability to kill, I know it. That’s what’s so beautiful about humanity. It’s inherent since your birth, that ability to fight and kill. It's one of my favorite things about you.

[There's a giggle from the speakers.]

Oh, I can see that look in your eyes, you want to know more about how to get out, right? Well, here’s the nitty-gritty: First, kill someone. Second, everyone gets to look around and make their own opinions. Third, everyone goes to trial. Fourth, everyone votes on who they think the murderer is! Now the path forks, you know, since you can be right or wrong, never both – if you managed to pick the right culprit, they will be executed! Fail to choose the right person, and everyone but the culprit will be executed! What a cunning culprit! And they alone shall walk free! That’s just what we call Natural Selection. You do know humans must obey basic laws just like all other mindless creatures, right? Right!

So, about this school... [He steeples his fingers, thinking.] You’ve each got a bedroom to yourselves, with a built-in bathroom. They both lock, by the way, they can only be opened by your card... Oh, there’s a laundry room, too! I wouldn’t want anyone getting smelly. And we’ve got a cafeteria! Don’t worry about where we get the food from, I assure you it’s all organic or whatever... Ahh, whatever, you guys'll figure it out in due time. You're high schoolers! It's time to start growing!

...Oh, I got so caught up in this stuff that I completely forgot to introduce myself! You lot can call me Yuri. Don’t forget it! If you need me, I’ll be there in a heartbeat. Anyway, enough about me, it's time to meet and greet! You'll all be living together and killing one another, so it's best to get to know everyone first, yeah? I won't distract you any longer.

So, carry on your fate, your joined destiny of mutual killing! Show me your humanity!

[The monitor shuts off, and his grinning face fades from the screen.]

[In your pockets is a small electronic card. It can only be opened with your fingerprint. Once unlocked, the card displays your name and photo and information on your height, weight, chest size, and Super High School Level title. The same information on your classmates is also displayed on a different screen within the card. The school rules are also displayed on the final screen.]

Apparently a girl, a little too young for high school, staring from within a pulled-up hoodie and a long mess of wavy hair. [Throughout the whole thing, Violet had been trying to keep to herself, clinging her clarinet case close to her. Even now, she had the appearance of an animal trying to wear the pelt of another beast--and failing at convincing anyone about it. She may have tried to impress others with her perfectly made-up face and hair, but her slouchy stature was a different story.

Still, what the hell was that presentation? It was like something out of a manga! Well, if it was, then she has to make some EPIC NAKAMA, right? She takes a deep breath and tries to talk to no one in particular...]

...Uh, th-that was like..um...waaaaaay creepy...right? I mean, who like, um...are they even serious?!

MURDER SCENE

[In the hall headed to the cafeteria is a trickle of blood. Following it to the wall, you turn your head and see red hair, dyed darker from the splatter. It's Tony, the Fun Expert - her face is pale with death, and blood has pooled beneath her from a stab wound on her back. The wound is a blunt but clean stab - nothing like the jagged rip that's been sewn up on her skirt. Next to her lifeless shell is a pair of bloodied sewing scissors, a small but sharp pair identical to what is found in the girls' sewing kits. The blade is nearly bent from effort, and the amount of blood on it may as well have rusted the sharp steel. Other than that, the floor is empty aside from the blood.]
